Electrical & Electronics — South Korea

Certification Introduction

Electronic and electrical products entering the South Korean market must comply with South Korea's mandatory KC certification system, supervised by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS). It covers all product categories including household appliances, consumer electronics, industrial electrical equipment, wireless communication products, etc. According to product risk levels, the certification is divided into three categories: mandatory safety certification, self-regulatory safety certification, and supplier self-confirmation. Products with wireless transmission functions require additional MSIP (formerly KCC) electromagnetic compatibility and radio certification, and energy-sensitive products require supplementary South Korean energy efficiency certification, which is a legal prerequisite for product listing and sales.

Technical Requirements

  • Safety requirements: Adopt Korean KS C series standards, most of which are equivalent to IEC international standards, such as KS C IEC 60335 (household appliances), KS C IEC 60950 (IT equipment), KC 62133 (lithium batteries). Tests cover fire prevention, electric shock protection, mechanical strength, insulation voltage resistance and other items.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility: Comply with KS CISPR 32 (electromagnetic interference) and KS IEC 61000-4 (electromagnetic immunity) standards, controlling conducted disturbance, radiated disturbance, electrostatic immunity, etc.
  • Wireless products: Must meet KC-RF requirements, verifying frequency legality, transmission power and bandwidth compliance.
  • Energy efficiency requirements: Products such as air conditioners and refrigerators must comply with South Korea's Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and be marked with energy efficiency grades.

Certification Process

Confirm the certification type and risk level corresponding to the product, prepare product technical materials (specification, circuit diagram, BOM, Korean instruction manual and label sample, etc.), submit the application to a South Korean officially approved institution, send samples to complete tests in line with Korean standards. Mandatory certification products need to accept factory inspection, and the KC certificate will be obtained after approval. Most certificates are valid for 5 years, and mandatory certification requires annual supervision and audit.
