Electrical & Electronics — Indonesia
Certification Introduction
Indonesia implements mandatory SNI (Indonesian National Standard) certification for electrical and electronic products, which is led and managed by the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN). This certification is a statutory access requirement for the import, production and sale of electrical and electronic products in the Indonesian market. Products without certification are prohibited from circulating in the market, and violators will face penalties including product seizure, fines and even market entry ban. Common electrical and electronic products subject to mandatory certification include incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, wires and cables, plugs and sockets, switches, circuit breakers, electric fans, batteries, luminaires, etc.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulation is SNI Mark Product Certification Procedures promulgated by the Indonesian Ministry of Industry and Trade via the Official Gazette in 1996, and certification rules are dynamically updated and managed by the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN). The scope of mandatory certification products will be adjusted, and the latest specific list shall be subject to the information published on BSN's official website.
Technical Requirements
Electrical and electronic products need to comply with the corresponding SNI standards for their categories. Most SNI standards are identical adoption of IEC international standards, and typical applicable standards include:
Primary batteries: SNI IEC 60086 series
Luminaires: SNI IEC 60598 series
Household plugs and sockets: SNI IEC 60884 series
Products are required to meet safety and performance related indicators, some categories need to comply with electromagnetic compatibility requirements, and complete technical materials such as product specifications, circuit diagrams and key component certifications need to be provided during application.
Certification Process
Exporters need to first confirm whether the product falls within the scope of mandatory certification, confirm the corresponding SNI standard, and prepare complete technical documents;
Overseas applicants need to appoint a local representative registered in Indonesia, and submit a formal application to a certification body authorized by BSN;
Send samples to an Indonesia-accredited laboratory to complete standard testing in accordance with requirements. After passing the test, the certification body will conduct document review and on-site factory audit to assess the factory's ability to continuously and stably produce compliant products;
After passing all reviews, you can obtain the SNI certification certificate and be allowed to affix the SNI mark on the product. Regular supervision audits are required during the validity period of the certificate, and renewal needs to be processed upon expiration.
