Certification Introduction
Indonesia implements mandatory SNI (Indonesian National Standard) certification for electronic and electrical products, which is led and managed by the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia (BSN). This certification is a statutory market-access requirement for the import, production and sales of electronic and electrical products in the Indonesian market. Products without certification are prohibited from circulating in the market, and violators will face penalties including product seizure, fines and even market exclusion. Common mandatory-certified electronic and electrical products include incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, wires and cables, plugs and sockets, switches, circuit breakers, electric fans, batteries, lighting fixtures, etc.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulation is the SNI Mark Product Certification Procedure promulgated via the Government Gazette by the Indonesian Ministry of Industry and Trade in 1996. Certification rules are dynamically updated and managed by BSN, the scope of mandatory certification products will be adjusted, and the latest specific list shall be subject to the information published on BSN's official website.
Technical Requirements
Electronic and electrical products shall comply with the corresponding SNI standards for their product categories. Most SNI standards are identical adoption of IEC international standards. Typical applicable standards include:
- Primary batteries: SNI IEC 60086 series
- Lighting fixtures: SNI IEC 60598 series
- Household plugs and sockets: SNI IEC 60884 series Products are required to meet safety and performance-related indicators, some categories need to comply with electromagnetic compatibility requirements, and complete technical materials such as product specifications, circuit diagrams, and key component certifications shall be provided during application.
Certification Process
Exporters shall first confirm whether their products fall within the mandatory certification scope, confirm the corresponding SNI standard, and prepare complete technical documents. Overseas applicants shall appoint a locally registered representative in Indonesia, and submit a formal application to a BSN-authorized certification body. Send samples to an Indonesia-accredited laboratory to complete standard testing as required. After passing the test, the certification body will conduct document review and on-site factory audit to evaluate the factory's ability to continuously and stably produce compliant products. After all links pass the review, the SNI certification certificate can be obtained, and the SNI mark is allowed to be affixed to the product. Regular supervision audits shall be accepted during the certificate validity period, and renewal shall be processed upon expiration.
