Certification Introduction
Electronic and electrical products entering the Nigerian market must meet the mandatory certification requirements of the SONCAP (Standards Organization of Nigeria Conformity Assessment Program) implemented by the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON). This certification is a necessary document for product customs clearance and legal market entry, covering most consumer and industrial electronic and electrical products. Products without this certification will be detained by customs or refused entry.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulatory basis is the SONCAP conformity assessment system released by the Standards Organization of Nigeria. Electronic and electrical products are included in the mandatory certification catalog, requiring all imported electronic and electrical products to obtain a SONCAP certificate before entering the market. Radio communication electronic equipment also needs to additionally meet the regulatory requirements of the Nigerian Communications Commission. Technical Requirements
- Safety requirements: Audio-video and information technology electronic equipment generally adopt the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC 62368-1 standard, which has replaced the traditional IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 standards, covering energy classification, fire protection, electrical safety, mechanical safety and other items.
- Electromagnetic compatibility requirements: Compliance with CISPR 22 (or the updated CISPR 32) standard is required, which regulates conducted disturbance, radiated disturbance and harmonic current to avoid interference to the power grid and other equipment.
- Test reports must be issued by ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. Existing internationally recognized certificates such as CB and CE can simplify part of the assessment process; the product body or packaging must clearly mark the SONCAP certification number, country of origin information and manufacturer information.
Certification Process
- Submit product registration application, together with complete product information, technical documents and qualified test reports
- The competent authority conducts compliance review on the submitted materials
- Arrange sampling inspection or pre-shipment inspection according to the product risk level, and verify the consistency between the product and the declared documents
- After all links pass the review, the SONCAP certificate of conformity will be issued, and the certificate is usually valid for one year
