Electrical & Electronics — Nicaragua
Certification Introduction
Nicaragua implements a mandatory market access certification system for electrical and electronic products, with different regulatory systems divided according to product categories:
Ordinary electrical and electronic products are supervised by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade (MIFIC), and mandatory INTECOP certification is implemented by the Nicaraguan Institute of Standards and Metrology. This is a necessary prerequisite for product customs clearance and market launch.
Electrical and electronic products with wireless communication functions must additionally obtain type approval certification from the Nicaraguan Telecommunications and Postal Company (TELCOR). INTECOP certification is valid for 1 year, while TELCOR certification is valid for 3 years. Certified products must be affixed with the corresponding certification mark before they can be legally sold.
Laws and Regulations
Ordinary electrical and electronic products: Follow the mandatory compliance assessment system established by MIFIC, and are managed by the mandatory technical specifications issued by the Nicaraguan Institute of Standards and Metrology
Wireless electrical and electronic products: The legal basis is Decree No. 200 of Nicaragua's General Telecommunications Law and subsequent supplementary regulations, which clearly require that all wireless equipment must pass type approval before import and sales. The overall certification system adopts Nicaragua's mandatory technical standard NTON, and most standards are equivalently converted from common international standards such as IEC and EN.
Technical Requirements
Electrical Safety: It is required to comply with the corresponding NTON standards. Core test items include insulation voltage resistance, leakage current detection, and mechanical strength test. The product shell and internal insulating materials must meet flame retardant requirements, with standards referencing IEC 60335 (home appliances), IEC 60950/62368 (IT equipment), IEC 60695, UL 94, etc.
Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): All electrical and electronic products must complete EMC testing to ensure no electromagnetic interference to other equipment, and meet the requirements of corresponding standards
Additional Requirements for Wireless Products: Radio frequency parameters (output power, frequency tolerance) and specific absorption rate (for handheld terminals) testing must be completed, in compliance with Nicaragua's spectrum specifications
Marking Requirements: The product body must be marked with Spanish safety warnings, rated voltage/power and other parameters, and the manual must provide contact information of the local agent in Nicaragua
Certification Process
Confirm product category, divide the corresponding certification regulatory system, and determine the certification mode according to the risk level;
Prepare a complete set of application materials and Spanish version technical documents, submit formal certification application, and complete application document review;
Send samples to complete the corresponding projects tests as required, and high-risk products need to cooperate with factory inspection;
Issue the certification certificate after passing the review, and complete the renewal procedure in advance before the certificate expires.
