Electrical & Electronics — Nicaragua

Certification Introduction

Nicaragua implements a mandatory market access certification system for electrical and electronic products, with different regulatory systems divided by product category:

  • General electrical and electronic products are regulated by the Nicaraguan Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade (MIFIC), and mandatory INTECOP certification is executed by the Nicaraguan Institute of Standards and Metrology. This certification is a necessary prerequisite for product customs clearance and market launch.
  • Electrical and electronic products with wireless communication functions must additionally obtain type approval certification from the Nicaraguan Telecommunications and Postal Corporation (TELCOR). The validity period of INTECOP certification is 1 year, and the validity period of TELCOR certification is 3 years. Certified products must be affixed with the corresponding certification mark before they can be legally sold.

Technical Requirements

  • Electrical safety: Must comply with the corresponding NTON standards. Core test items include dielectric strength test, leakage current detection, and mechanical strength test. The product enclosure and internal insulating materials must meet flame retardant requirements. Reference standards include IEC 60335 (household appliances), IEC 60950/62368 (IT equipment), IEC 60695, UL 94, etc.
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): All electrical and electronic products must complete EMC testing to ensure no electromagnetic interference to other devices, and meet the requirements of corresponding standards.
  • Additional requirements for wireless products: Radio frequency parameters (output power, frequency tolerance) and specific absorption rate (for handheld terminals) testing must be completed, to comply with Nicaraguan spectrum specifications.
  • Labeling requirements: The product body must be marked with Spanish safety warnings, rated voltage/power and other parameters, and the instruction manual must provide contact information of the local agent in Nicaragua.

Certification Process

Confirm product category, classify it into the corresponding certification regulatory system, determine the certification mode according to risk level, prepare a complete set of application materials and Spanish-version technical documents, submit a formal certification application, complete application document review, send samples to complete corresponding project tests as required, high-risk products need to cooperate with factory inspection, and the certification certificate will be issued after the review is passed. Renewal procedures must be processed in advance before the certificate expires.
