Electrical & Electronics — Guyana
Certification Introduction
For electronic and electrical products to be placed on the Guyanese market or cleared for export, mandatory certification led by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is required, and uncertified products cannot be legally sold. The certification system is developed locally based on IEC international standards, covering most mainstream electronic and electrical categories including industrial equipment, household appliances, information technology equipment, smart home devices and more. Currently, the certificate is valid for 3 years, and energy label requirements are scheduled to be added in 2025. The specific latest requirements shall be subject to the official announcement of GNBS.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulatory authority is Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), which implements a mandatory market access certification system. Relevant requirements are incorporated into Guyana's technical regulatory framework for imported products, and standard updates and regulatory adjustments will be published via GNBS official gazette. New regulations have taken effect since 2024: smart home products with wireless functions are mandatorily required to add wireless performance testing.
Technical Requirements
Safety Testing: The GYS 62368-1 standard is implemented, replacing the traditional 60065/60950 standards. It adopts a hazard source assessment method, requiring graded protection for energy sources, plastic enclosures to pass the 850℃ glow wire fire resistance test, moving components to meet the 10N force mechanical protection requirement, and insulating coating thickness to be ≥0.4mm.
EMC Verification: The GYS 61000 series standards are implemented, which are equivalently adopted from the IEC 61000 series, covering test items including radiated emission, electrostatic immunity, voltage sag and more.
Special Requirements: Wireless products need supplementary EN 300 328 wireless function testing; lithium batteries must provide the latest version of UN38.3 transportation test report; technical documents must be provided in English, and circuit diagrams must mark the parameters of safety-critical components.
Certification Process
The enterprise completes product evaluation in advance to confirm the applicable certification requirements and corresponding standards for the product;
Prepare and fill out the certification application form, organize and submit complete technical documents and test-related materials;
Provide samples as required and send them to the laboratory designated by GNBS for testing;
Some high-risk products need to cooperate with GNBS for on-site factory audit;
After passing both the test and audit, GNBS issues the certification certificate, and the product can complete customs clearance and be sold on the market with the certificate.
WANVE (万维WANVE) provides one-stop full compliance support for enterprise export.
