Electrical & Electronics — Botswana
Certification Introduction
The Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) is the only official standard management and certification authority responsible for market access of electrical and electronic products (EEE) in Botswana. BOBS certification is a mandatory market access requirement for EEE entering the Botswana market, covering all categories of EEE including home electronics and appliances, industrial electronic equipment, lighting products, power adapters and more. This certification system complies with the regional standard harmonization framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), allowing certified products to easily access the broader Southern African regional market.
Laws and Regulations
The certification system is established under the Botswana Standards Act and follows relevant WTO/TBT rules. Electrical and electronic products listed in the mandatory certification catalog must obtain BOBS conformity certification before import and sales, and a valid certification certificate must be presented during import customs clearance. Regulatory authorities conduct regular market spot checks. Uncertified or non-compliant products will be subject to penalties including return, destruction, and fines based on cargo value. Specific penalty rules are subject to the latest official announcement issued by BOBS.
Technical Requirements
Core Safety: Household electrical products must comply with the IEC 60335 series safety standards, and electromagnetic compatibility must meet the relevant limit requirements of CISPR 14-1.
General Specification: Botswana's power grid is 230V/50Hz, and plugs and sockets must conform to the BS 546 three-round-pin specification; Certified products must mark the BOBS certification mark and certificate number on the product body.
Energy Efficiency & Environmental Protection: Products such as air conditioners, refrigerators and lighting are required to mandatorily affix energy efficiency rating labels and meet the minimum energy efficiency index requirements; Restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products follows RoHS 2.0 requirements, and plastic components must conform to the corresponding flame retardant grade.
Documentation Requirements: Product manuals must be provided in English + Tswana bilingual versions.
Certification Process
The applicant submits the certification application form and complete product technical documents, including circuit diagrams, material BOM lists, third-party test reports under the ILAC-MRA mutual recognition system, enterprise qualification documents, etc.;
BOBS reviews the completeness of the application documents;
Samples are sent to BOBS-accredited laboratories to complete type testing as required;
After all tests and reviews are approved, a certificate of conformity will be issued, and continuous export enterprises can apply for registered certification with a 3-year validity period.
