Certification Introduction
As a member state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), when electrical and electronic products are placed on the local market or exported to Barbados, they must complete the conformity certification led by the Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI) to prove the products meet local safety and technical requirements. Products without valid compliance certification may be denied entry or prohibited from sale, and importers must complete import qualification registration with the Barbados Customs and Tax Administration in advance.
Laws and Regulations
Barbados follows the unified market compliance framework of the Caribbean Community, with BNSI responsible for national product certification and standard management. Core regulatory bases include the mandatory product standard catalogue issued by BNSI. Import supervision follows the import management rules of Barbados Customs. Telecommunications-related electrical and electronic products must additionally obtain access approval from the Barbados Telecommunications Authority. The latest regulatory requirements should be checked and verified via BNSI's official website.
Technical Requirements
Electrical and electronic products generally adopt equivalent international standards, with core requirements as follows:
- Household appliance safety: comply with IEC 60335 series standards
- Information technology equipment safety: comply with IEC 60950 series standards All test reports must be issued by ILAC-accredited laboratories. Application documents must be provided in English; non-English documents require notarized translation. Products with wireless functions must additionally meet relevant technical requirements for radio frequency emission.
Certification Process
Clarify product classification, confirm the product's certification category and corresponding standard requirements; prepare product technical documents (instructions, circuit diagrams, etc.), complete required product compliance testing and obtain valid test reports; submit the certification application and all materials to the Barbados National Standards Institution; the competent authority reviews application materials and confirms product compliance; after review approval, obtain the conformity certification certificate, then complete relevant customs clearance procedures.
