Electrical & Electronics — Bahamas

Certification Introduction

Bahamas implements mandatory BBS certification for electronic and electrical products entering the local market, which is managed and implemented by the Bahamas Bureau of Standards (BBS). It covers most common electronic and electrical categories including household appliances, information technology equipment, lighting products, power products, inverters, etc. Products without valid compliance certification cannot clear customs and be sold in the Bahamas market.

Technical Requirements

  • Electrical Safety: Testing is implemented with reference to IEC international standards. For example, household appliances follow IEC 60335, photovoltaic inverters follow IEC 62109. Test items include voltage withstand, grounding continuity, temperature rise, abnormal operation, etc. Product insulation and flame retardant materials must meet the corresponding UL94 flame retardant grade requirements.
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility: Adopt CISPR 22 and IEC 61000 series standards, and must meet the limit requirements for radiated emission, conducted disturbance, electrostatic discharge immunity, etc.
  • Energy Efficiency and Labeling: Controlled product categories must comply with energy efficiency regulation requirements, affix localized energy efficiency labels pre-approved by BBS, and mark core energy efficiency parameters.
  • Grid Compatibility: The grid specification of Bahamas is 120V/60Hz, so product voltage and frequency parameters must meet local requirements.

Certification Process

  1. Confirm product control classification, confirm corresponding testing standards, and organize complete product technical documents.
  2. Send samples to qualified laboratories accredited by BBS or filed by CARICOM-AC, complete all required test items, and obtain a valid qualified test report.
  3. Submit a formal certification application to the Bahamas Bureau of Standards, and upload application materials such as test reports and technical documents at the same time.
  4. The Bahamas Bureau of Standards completes document review, issues the BBS certification certificate after approval, and products can clear customs and enter the market for sale after affixing the compliance mark.
