Certification Introduction

Bahamas implements mandatory BBS certification for electronic and electrical products entering the local market, which is managed and implemented by the Bahamas Bureau of Standards (BBS). It covers most common electronic and electrical categories including household appliances, information technology equipment, lighting products, power supply products, inverters and more. Products without valid compliance certification cannot clear customs to be sold in the Bahamas market.

Laws and Regulations

The core regulatory basis is the Mandatory Product Certification Regulations issued by the Bahamas Bureau of Standards, and the National Energy Efficiency Act officially implemented in 2023. Part of the compliance requirements are included in the regional coordination framework of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and relevant technical documents issued by accredited filing institutions within the region are recognized. The specific control scope and latest requirements shall be subject to the official public information released by the Bahamas Bureau of Standards.

Technical Requirements

Electrical Safety: Testing is implemented with reference to IEC international standards. For example, household appliances follow IEC 60335, photovoltaic inverters follow IEC 62109. Test items include voltage withstand, ground continuity, temperature rise, abnormal operation, etc.; product insulation and flame retardant materials must meet the corresponding UL94 flame retardant grade requirements. Electromagnetic Compatibility: CISPR 22 and IEC 61000 series standards are adopted, and products need to meet limit requirements for radiated emission, conducted disturbance, electrostatic discharge immunity and other indicators. Energy Efficiency and Labeling: Controlled products must comply with energy efficiency regulation requirements, and affix a localized energy efficiency label pre-approved by BBS, marking core energy efficiency parameters. Grid Adaptation: The grid specification of Bahamas is 120V/60Hz, and product voltage and frequency parameters must meet local requirements.

Certification Process

Confirm product control classification, clarify corresponding test standards, and organize complete product technical documentation.

Send samples to a qualified laboratory accredited by BBS or filed by CARICOM-AC, complete all required test items, and obtain a valid qualified test report.

Submit a formal certification application to the Bahamas Bureau of Standards, and upload application materials such as test reports and technical documents simultaneously.

The Bahamas Bureau of Standards completes document review, issues the BBS certification certificate after approval, and products can clear customs and enter the market for sales after affixing the compliance mark.
