Electrical & Electronics — Uruguay

Certification Introduction

Uruguay is a member state of the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR). Electrical and electronic products entering the Uruguayan market must meet mandatory compliance certification requirements, managed by the Uruguayan Institute of Technical Standards (UNIT) and the Uruguayan Technological Laboratory (LATU). The regulation covers 28 categories of electrical and electronic products including household appliances, IT equipment, lighting fixtures, industrial low-voltage electrical products and communication equipment. Uncertified products cannot clear customs or be sold on the market. The validity of the certification mark is generally 1-3 years, and annual surveillance audits are required.

Technical Requirements

Uruguay's power supply standard is 220V/50Hz, and plugs must comply with IRAM 2063 standard.

  • Safety requirements: UNIT national standards are adopted, aligned with IEC international standards; household appliances follow IEC 60335 series, IT equipment follows IEC 60950 series;
  • Electromagnetic compatibility: Comply with CISPR 22 and UNIT 5000 series standards;
  • Marking requirements: All warning markings and instruction manuals must be provided in Spanish;
  • Energy efficiency requirements: Some major product categories need to meet mandatory energy efficiency indicators.

Certification Process

Enterprises first confirm the corresponding product classification and official certification standards, prepare a full set of technical documents (including product circuit diagrams, key component lists, test reports, Spanish instruction manuals, etc.) and complete document notarization and authentication; submit the certification application to the official authority, send samples to an accredited laboratory for testing as required; high-risk products need to pass an on-site audit of the factory production quality system; after all tests and audits are passed, obtain the official certification certificate, and the product can be marketed after affixing the compliance mark.
