Electrical & Electronics — Jamaica

Certification Introduction

For electronic and electrical products placed on the market or imported into Jamaica, they must obtain mandatory BSJ certification implemented by the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ). This system covers the vast majority of consumer and industrial electronic and electrical products. Exemption cases: Imported samples, temporary exhibition items, and commercial samples valued below 500 USD can apply for inspection exemption. There are two certification modes: Type test certification applies to bulk imports, and batch inspection certification applies to single shipments.

Technical Requirements

Standard System: Local Jamaican JS standards are prioritized. For electronic and electrical products, the applicable standards are JS 618:2015 (low voltage safety) and JS 720:2018 (electromagnetic compatibility). If no corresponding JS standard is available, IEC/ASTM/ISO international standards are acceptable Core Testing: Household appliances must complete IEC 60335 series safety tests, all products must meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements, and IoT electronic devices have added cybersecurity penetration testing requirements since 2023 Basic Adaptation Requirements: Products must adapt to Jamaica's 110V/50Hz power supply standard, and must be affixed with compliant energy efficiency labels Labeling Requirements: BSJ certification mark and the address of the local importer must be marked, and bilingual risk warnings in English/Patois must be provided Chemical Compliance: Products must comply with the restricted substance requirements of the CARICOM REACH regulation

Certification Process

Submit certification application form and complete set of application documents, including certificate of origin, English technical specification, product circuit diagram, material declaration, etc. 2Send samples for testing. CB test reports issued by ILAC mutual recognition accredited laboratories can be submitted for certificate conversion, no repeated testing is required.
BSJ completes document review. After bulk certification is approved, the certificate will be issued; for batch certification, port sampling and verification will be implemented.
After obtaining the certificate, annual supervision audit is required. Certificate renewal must be processed in advance before expiration, and re-filing and testing are required for critical design changes of the product.
