Certification Introduction
South Korea implements mandatory compliance access management for motor vehicles and their components. The core certification is K-MARK automotive certification, which falls under the scope of South Korea's unified KC certification system. It is supervised by the Korean Transportation Safety Authority (KOTSA), covering complete vehicles and various key components including engines, brake systems, steering systems, and on-board electrical equipment. It is a mandatory access requirement for products to clear customs legally and be marketed and sold in South Korea.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulatory basis is South Korea's Automobile Management Act and the supporting Safety Standards for Auto Parts, with law enforcement and supervision carried out by the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Regulations clearly stipulate that all imported and locally produced motor vehicles and components must obtain compliance certification; products without certification cannot clear customs or enter circulation in the South Korean market.
Technical Requirements
- Products must conform to the safety, performance and environmental protection indicators of the corresponding Korean National Standards (KS); complete vehicles must meet core requirements including crash safety and exhaust emission
- All types of key components must meet the strength, reliability and functional safety indicator requirements corresponding to their product category
- For on-board electronic and electrical products, additional compliance with KC certification's relevant electromagnetic compatibility standards is required
Certification Process
Prepare product technical documents and application materials in advance, then submit the certification application; complete sample testing of specified items in accordance with corresponding technical standards; the regulatory authority conducts document review, and carries out on-site factory inspection when necessary; after passing the review, the compliance certification certificate is issued, and products can be affixed with the corresponding mark to enter the South Korean market.
