Electrical & Electronics — Trinidad and Tobago

Certification Introduction

Trinidad and Tobago implements mandatory access certification for electronic and electrical products, uniformly managed by the country's Standards Bureau (TTBS). As a member state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), its certification system aligns with the regional compliance framework and recognizes test reports issued by Chinese CNAS-accredited laboratories, which can shorten the certification cycle. Electronic and electrical products without valid certification are prohibited from import, sale and circulation.

Technical Requirements

  • Standard adoption: IEC international standards and Caribbean Community standards (CROSQ) are prioritized, and EN standards are equivalently adopted for some products.
  • Core test items: Electronic and electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC); radio equipment requires additional testing for transmission power, frequency stability and spurious emission. 5GHz Wi-Fi equipment must support dynamic frequency selection (DFS) function.
  • Documentation and labeling requirements: Test reports must be issued by ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. Products must be permanently marked with TTBS certification number, manufacturer traceability information and approved frequency band (for wireless products).

Certification Process

Enterprises first confirm the product category and corresponding applicable technical standards, prepare technical documents (including product manuals, circuit diagrams, qualified test reports, etc.) and provide representative test samples. Then submit a formal certification application to TTBS and pay the corresponding certification fee. TTBS completes document review and sample testing, issues a 5-year valid certification after passing the review and test. Products are subject to no more than 2 market spot checks per year after launch.
