Electrical & Electronics — Kenya

Certification Introduction

Kenya implements a mandatory Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVOC) system for electrical and electronic products, uniformly managed by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). Radio and communication electronic devices additionally require type certification from the Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK). Goods without valid compliance certificates will be returned and subject to high fines. The complete mandatory product catalog shall be checked against the latest list on the official KEBS website.

Technical Requirements

  • Safety and EMC standards: Equivalent adoption of IEC international standards. Household appliances correspond to KS IEC 60335, and electromagnetic compatibility meets the requirements of IEC 61000 series
  • Rated parameters: Compatible with Kenya's 240V/50Hz power grid, plugs comply with British standard three-pin KS requirements
  • Marking requirements: Energy efficiency level must be indicated; labels shall use English or Swahili, marking the country of origin and manufacturer information. Some products need to be affixed with the KEBS certification mark
  • Wireless communication products additionally need to meet CAK limits for radio frequency and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), and official CB/IEC/CE test reports valid within 12 months are accepted.

Certification Process

  1. Confirm the mandatory requirements corresponding to the product HS code, prepare technical documents including valid test reports, product specification, trade invoice and product photos
  2. Submit the application and select the certification path based on export conditions: Batch CoC certification for single shipments, 1-year registration certification for long-term exports, and 3-year type certification for fixed models
  3. Complete pre-shipment inspection as required
  4. After passing the review, obtain the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for customs clearance and market entry; wireless communication products additionally need to complete the CAK certification process, which requires a designated local legal representative in Kenya to submit the application, and obtain the certificate after testing at an accredited laboratory.
