Certification Introduction
The mandatory market access requirements for electronic and electrical products entering Malawi are uniformly regulated by the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS). Products without valid compliance certification face risks of customs detention, fines and even market exclusion. This system covers all categories of consumer and industrial electronic and electrical products, and serves as the core access threshold to guarantee product quality, safety and environmental performance.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulatory basis is the Malawi Standards Act, and hazardous substance control follows the Malawi E-Waste Regulations. All imported and locally sold electronic and electrical products must meet the requirements of the above regulations. The specific product control catalog shall be subject to official information released by MBS.
Technical Requirements
- Safety performance shall comply with IEC international standards or equivalent MBS standards. Test items cover electrical safety (withstand voltage, leakage current), mechanical strength, fire resistance and electric shock prevention, etc.
- Products shall meet relevant electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, and internationally recognized test results are accepted.
- The applicable voltage is 230V/50Hz, and plugs shall conform to BS 546 (three round pins) or BS 1363 British standard specifications.
- The use of hazardous substances such as lead and cadmium is restricted, and a corresponding RoHS test report shall be provided.
- Products must be marked with the MBS certification number, rated parameters and production date, and accompanied by an English instruction manual with safety warnings.
- Products listed in the energy efficiency control catalog shall additionally provide an energy efficiency test report.
Certification Process
- Submit the certification application form and complete set of product technical documents to MBS, including circuit diagrams, instruction manuals, list of key components and other materials.
- MBS completes the document compliance review, with a typical review cycle of 15-30 working days.
- Send product samples to MBS-accredited laboratories to complete all required tests.
- High-risk product categories may require on-site sampling inspection or audit of the factory quality management system.
- After all links pass the review, MBS issues the Certificate of Conformity (COC). The certificate is valid for 1-3 years, and renewal is required upon expiration.
