Certification Introduction
For electronic and electrical products placed on the Guyanese market or for export customs clearance, mandatory certification led by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) is required. Products without valid certification cannot be legally sold. The certification system is localized based on IEC international standards, covering most mainstream electronic and electrical categories including industrial equipment, household appliances, information technology equipment, and smart home products. Currently, the certificate validity term is 3 years. Energy label requirements are planned to be added in 2025, and the specific latest requirements shall be subject to GNBS official announcements.
Laws and Regulations
The core regulatory authority is the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), which implements a mandatory market access certification system. Relevant requirements are integrated into Guyana's technical regulatory framework for imported products. Standard updates and regulatory adjustments will be released through GNBS official gazettes. New regulations have taken effect since 2024: smart home products with wireless functions are mandatorily required to add wireless performance testing.
Technical Requirements
- Safety testing: Conducted in accordance with GYS 62368-1, replacing the traditional 60065/60950 standards. It adopts a hazard assessment method, requiring graded protection for energy sources, plastic enclosures passing the 850°C glowing wire fire resistance test, moving components meeting the 10N force mechanical protection requirement, and insulating coating thickness of no less than 0.4mm.
- EMC verification: Conducted in accordance with GYS 61000 series standards, which are equivalent to IEC 61000 series, covering test items including radiated disturbance, electrostatic immunity, and voltage sag.
- Special requirements: Wireless products need supplementary EN 300 328 wireless function testing; lithium batteries must provide the latest UN38.3 transportation test report; technical documents shall be provided in English; circuit diagrams shall mark parameters of safety critical components.
Certification Process
Enterprises complete product pre-assessment first to confirm the applicable certification requirements and corresponding standards; prepare and fill out the certification application form, organize and submit complete technical documents and testing-related materials; provide samples as required and send them to GNBS designated laboratories for testing; some high-risk products need to cooperate with GNBS on on-site factory audits; after passing both testing and audit, GNBS will issue the certification certificate, and products can complete customs clearance and enter the market with the certificate.
