Certification Introduction
Suriname implements mandatory market access certification for electrical and electronic products, which is divided into two core categories of requirements:
- General electrical and electronic products must obtain SSB certification from the Suriname Standards Bureau (SSB), covering the vast majority of consumer and industrial electrical and electronic products
- Telecommunications electrical and electronic products additionally need to obtain TCS certification supervised by the Telecommunications Authority of Suriname (TAS) Products without corresponding certifications cannot be cleared to enter the Surinamese market, and are not allowed to be sold legally locally.
Laws and Regulations
The main regulatory basis is the Low Voltage Electrical Equipment Act of Suriname. The Suriname Standards Bureau (SSB) is responsible for compliance supervision of general electrical and electronic products, and the Telecommunications Authority of Suriname (TAS) is responsible for spectrum and radio frequency supervision of telecommunications-related electrical and electronic products. Customs mandatorily requires imported electrical and electronic products to provide valid certification documents for release. The latest regulatory requirements shall be subject to the official information released by the Suriname Standards Bureau.
Technical Requirements
- Safety requirements: Equivalent adoption of IEC international electrotechnical standards. Testing of insulation performance, voltage resistance, terminal block temperature rise (≤60K) and voltage withstand capability is required, to adapt to Suriname's 127V single-phase / 220V three-phase voltage system
- Electromagnetic compatibility: Requires product harmonic distortion rate ≤5%. Telecommunications products additionally need to meet radio frequency performance and spectrum specification requirements
- Labeling: It is mandatory to mark product information, operation instructions and safety warnings in Dutch, and product interfaces must be compatible with local Type C/F sockets
- Hazardous electrical and electronic products (such as lithium batteries) shall comply with the United Nations dangerous goods transport regulations, provide SDS documents and affix GHS hazard pictograms
Certification Process
- Confirm product classification and clarify the required certification type (SSB certification only, or SSB+TCS dual certification)
- Prepare a full set of technical documents, including product manuals, technical parameters, qualified test reports, etc.
- Submit certification application to the corresponding regulatory authority and pay the required application fees
- Cooperate to complete document review or sampling test evaluation
- After passing review and testing, collect the certification certificate, and the product can be cleared for market entry after affixing the certification mark
