Electrical & Electronics — Botswana

Certification Introduction

Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) is the only official national standard management and certification authority responsible for market access of electronic and electrical products in Botswana. BOBS certification is a mandatory access requirement for electronic and electrical products to enter the Botswana market, covering all categories of products including household electronics and appliances, industrial electronic equipment, lighting products, and power adapters. This certification system complies with the regional standard harmonization framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and certified products can conveniently access the broader Southern African regional market.

Technical Requirements

  • Core Safety: Household appliance products must comply with the IEC 60335 series safety standards, and electromagnetic compatibility must meet the relevant limit requirements of CISPR 14-1.
  • General Adaptation: The grid specification of Botswana is 230V/50Hz, and plugs and sockets must comply with the BS 546 three-round-pin specification; certified products must mark the BOBS certification mark and certificate number on the product body.
  • Energy Efficiency and Environmental Protection: Products such as air conditioners, refrigerators and lighting are required to affix mandatory energy efficiency grade labels and meet the minimum energy efficiency index requirements; restriction of hazardous substances in electronic and electrical products follows RoHS 2.0 requirements, and plastic components must comply with the corresponding flame retardant grade.
  • Documentation Requirements: Product manuals must be provided in English and Tswana bilingual versions.

Certification Process

Applicants submit the certification application form and complete product technical documents, including circuit diagrams, material BOM lists, third-party test reports under the ILAC-MRA mutual recognition system, enterprise qualification documents, etc.; BOBS reviews the completeness of application documents; samples are sent to a BOBS-approved laboratory to complete type testing as required; after all tests and reviews are passed, a certificate of conformity is issued, and continuous exporting enterprises can apply for registration certification with a validity of three years.
